Non-Surgical Lip Enhancement

In this article I want to talk about non-surgical or “minimally invasive” lip enhancement.  When I initially mention lip enhancement, many people automatically think of the many movie stars and their ridiculously gigantic lips and how they look totally un-natural.  Well that’s NOT what we are talking about here.  Lip enhancements can be subtle.  Just enough to raise someones eyebrow from across the table, but not so much to be overwhelming your entire face….and certainly not so much to change the look of “you”.  Of course if you are someone looking for people to notice….that’s easy enough as well:)

There are a couple great products that have been extensively tested that I use for subtle lip enhancements.  I believe Juvederm is a great product to achieve a nice full and naturally feeling soft lip.

Let’s answer a few common questions.

How long does a lip enhancement last?

Juvederm enhancement will last about 3-4 months after your first visit.  With scheduled injections, you will begin to need less frequent injections and be able to get about 12 months out of one injection eventually.

Are there side effects?

I never like to sugar coat anything when you are talking about medical or surgical procedures.  There are always risks to any medical or surgical procedure (of course there are risks to walking across the street everyday as well), but the risks are extremely low with Juvederm lip enhancements.  The main complications associated with these Juvederm lip enhancements are bleeding (bruising really), lumpy lips and infection. These are very treatable problems if you do perhaps have a complication. I always discuss the risks of procedures and answer all questions prior to initiating any procedure.

Is there any downtime?

There is really no downtime such as in surgery.  You may have some redness at the injection site for up to 12 hours, and swelling for a up to a couple days but there is no time in which you will be unable to perform your normal daily activities.

Does it hurt?

There is certainly some discomfort with these injections, however if you are someone who does not want to have any pain, we are able to numb the lips prior to the enhancement injection providing a more comfortable procedure.

Will everyone know I got a lip enhancement?

It’s up to you.  Facial cosmetic enhancements with dermal fillers can be tailored to your preference.  If you want big pouty lips that look like you’ve had them enhanced, I can do that.  However, if you are like most of my patients and wish to to have a subtle enhancement, that is what we can achieve.

I hope this answered some questions you had about non-surgical lip enhancements.  If you have further questions, please feel free to email me anytime.

Take care,

-Dr. Buck
